resort review | outrigger | mauritius - colonial azure vista vibes

view from outrigger beach bar

sit back, relax... it's rum time

stationed right on the beachfront in the beautiful south of this magical island outrigger is a sprawling resort that lays claim to some of the most pristine stretches of tropical coastline this island nation has to offer. white sandy beaches, azure waters & unbelievable sunsets are just a few things that this polished luxury behemoth offers.

resorts of this size can at times feel lacking in the personal touch. but outrigger feels, intimate especially at the private access plantation club where service & quality is taken to new heights.

accommodation

outrigger has a myriad of room types but in my opinion, the beachfront suites we stayed in were by far the finest, a space this size would be classed as a large luxury apartment in most european metropolises.

with a separate living area & huge bathroom with not only, a jacuzzi tub but a zen garden that is accessed from the shower room. the large seaview terrace is where the magic happens, being out in nature listening to the sound of hundreds of bird species that call this place home is a privilege. early mornings were a delight, watching the waves crash in the distance is a somewhat spiritual experience that calms the mind & body giving you a clear head to take in the natural laid-back beaches vibes of the resort.

the property

spread over an enormous area with a protected lagoon teeming with over 70 species of tropical fish & colorful coral at its heart, this slice of paradise is envied the whole world over for its outstanding natural beauty.

just a short drive away you'll find unesco site of le morne where the only underwater waterfall in the world can be seen. it's actually a wondrous illusion, the sand & silt on the ocean floor runoff in a way that makes it look like they're pouring down a waterfall.

numerous restaurants, bars & plenty of amenities such as a gym, volleyball court, kite surfing & pools including an adults-only serenity area are sure to keep the most social & active guests occupied. the nightly entertainment incorporating traditional music & dancing gives a sense of connection to local history & culture.

wellness is a core principle of the resort. with aqua aerobics & yoga, those seeking to keep active working off all those calories from the delicious meals are in for a treat. the navasana spa is a serene space to harmonize the mind, body & soul. a place where you can relax with a traditional mauritian massage or as we did, the couples treatment.

gastronomy & the plantation club

by far our favorite area of the resort had to be the private access plantation club. the serene space harkens back to the time of the colonies, with its whitewashed walls & rattan furniture, the pool area & bar are a great place to relax & enjoy their fantastic afternoon teas & cocktail hour where the local rum flows freely.

their showcase sparkling wine breakfast is a delight. a tiered masterpiece of local & foreign delicacies made up of tropical fruits, charcuterie & freshly baked pastries. we spent most of our morning on the deck of the club overlooking the pool out to the lush mountains in the distance.

coral reef
